Every once in a while you come across a story that stops you dead in your tracks. A story that will have you scratching your head and thinking to yourself, "How or Why". Well, we are sure many of you will think the same thing when you learn about the founder of Undies by BlendiTone, Dr. Yolanda Flournah-Perkins.
For those of you that follow Yolanda then you will see that she is an open book about her past. Several years ago, while a college student in Orlando, she made a terrible decision and poor choice that resulted in her being sentenced to 3 years in Federal Prison.
Upon her release from prison, Yolanda faced multiple challenges. But nothing compared to the challenge she faced when applying for a job. She was told NO after No after No after NO. Day in and day out, while at the halfway house in Fort Myers, Yolanda was rejected and denied employment. She was told that either (a) she didn't meet the requirements for the job; or (b) that she was overqualified.
With each NO that Yolanda received, it pushed her harder and harder to keep going. There were days she wanted to give up, but she didn't. And finally, after filling out over 250+ job applications, Yolanda was finally giving a second chance. She was finally offered a job with Goodwill Industries as a Spanish translator in their Human Resources department! Yes, in case you didn't know, Yolanda is fluent in Spanish and it was all because of her experience and opportunity she had in high school to be an exchange student in Argentina. (That's a story for another day :))
Life will always present us with challenges but it is how you respond to those challenges determines the outcome. Sure, Yolanda could have had a pity party about the hundreds of rejections she received from employers that did not believe in second chances. Sure, Yolanda could have blamed everyone else for her shortcomings, but she didn't. Instead, Yolanda owned up to her mistakes, accepted full responsibility and embraced her second chances.
Today, Yolanda is proof that with consistency, hard work and a determined mindset, you can always change the trajectory of your story! Yolanda's advice to anyone that's faced with challenges and setbacks are simple "Use your adversity to create MULTIPLE opportunities" by Dr. Yolanda Flournah-Perkins
